Biography
Mr. Chavez is a graduate of Columbia Law School and was an editor on the Columbia Law Review. Following graduation, Mr. Chavez practiced law in Washington, D.C., focusing on complex commercial litigation involving insurance coverage defense, government contracting fraud and recovery, telecommunications regulation, and white collar defense on financial and corporate accounting transactions. Mr. Chavez's practice also included internal corporate investigations relating to accounting compliance and regulatory enforcement, and counseling clients regarding these matters. In 2002, Mr. Chavez became Of Counsel with the Menlo Park, California office of Latham & Watkins where he continued his commercial litigation practice and corporate accounting review and compliance counseling. Mr. Chavez later joined a California law firm where he focused on mortgage fraud and title insurance analysis, counseling and litigation. Mr. Chavez continues with these practice areas with Smith Dollar.
Mr. Chavez has also been heavily involved with the development and support of legal aid programs to provide quality civil legal services to impoverished clientele in a variety of areas including landlord/tenant relations, consumer matters, and government benefits.
Mr. Chavez is licensed to practice in California, Washington, D.C., and New Mexico, and is admitted to the bars of the United States Supreme Court, and federal courts in California, Washington D.C., New Mexico, and Colorado.
